Cause the Lumberjack Spirit "burns in my soul"

I still remember the day I got my acceptance letter in the mail as if it was yesterday. I came home from school. No one was home, so I checked the mail. Inside was a small envelope from SFASU. I was a tad nervous. Don’t they always say, “the smaller the envelope, the bigger the rejection?” I walked into the kitchen, opened the letter and confetti flew everywhere. Everywhere I tell Y’all. It was all over my kitchen floor. Side note: I think I still have some of that confetti stashed away. Inside the card read: CONGRATULATIONS you’re a LUMBERJACK.

Y’all, I was so excited. Well, excited would be an understatement on how I felt. See I was all “cant-pick-a-college-cause-I-don't-want-to-make-such-an-important-decision-at-18, ” and this letter legit came like two weeks before I was to graduate high school. But for a few reasons besides that, it had come down to SFASU, a relatively small school in the grand scheme of Texas versus my 1st choice big 12 schools.

Looking back now I couldn’t have imagined going to any other school; choosing a smallish school was the best decision for me. Ok, maybe finances had a huge part in my decision, but that’s beside the point for this post. I honestly don’t think I would have been able to handle a large university. SFASU was close enough to come home on the weekends but far enough where the family didn’t bug me.

All in all chosen’ a school three hours away, in the middle of nowhere, in the Piney Woods of East Texas, in a town the same size as my hometown was one of the smartest decision I ever made.

While in college I spent many years working for the University and gathered more knowledge than one probably needs within University Affairs and college in general.  To the highs such as representing the University at conferences; Student Government; planning the largest event the University has annually and shattering attendance records and profits to even being on a first name basis with the University President.

I could go on and on but I won’t. Y’all get the point, and that is not the purpose of this post. I say this to say: Here are my five tips to incoming freshman. Heck students in general.

I texted the bestfrans and asked them what would be the one piece of advice they would give in incoming freshman. The response, "Go Greek!" I'll amend that cause maybe Greek Life isn't for you. But the 1st piece of advice I would give is to join something whether it be Greek, an organization/club or sports team, etc. It could be as simple as making Frans with the people in your residence hall. The last thing you want to do is be miserable where you live. I could quote you the statics and studies on how much money Universities spend on retention research and materials but I won't. Remember the whole I worked for the University. Just know the more involved you are in college, the better the experience will be and the more likely you are to graduate from said University. Y'all, there are even studies that show students who go home that first weekend which is Labor Day and the likelihood of them staying at the University. Spoiler Alert: it's low.
Don't study so much. Y'all, let me explain. I am not advocating not studying. I'm saying there's such a thing as over studying, and sometimes it won't matter in the end. Example time: One semester I got permission to take 21 hours. Keep in mind 12 hours is considered a full-time student. I was a Liberal Arts student. Think history. Think political science. Think Sociology etc. My classes were filled with essays. One for my minor, senior gender studies capstone, was one giant essay that made a semesters grade. I stretched myself so thin that I had a meltdown at 3 am on the floor in Whataburger covered in ketchup. I went to a smallish college. People saw me. To make matters worse, I hyped myself up on Benedryl and Monsters. Not something I would recommend. I have the embarrassing facebook statuses as scars. Y'all, I couldn't find enough hours in the day, and my solution was no sleep/more essay writing. As you can guess I still overslept for my International Politics exam, one of the lowest points in my college career. Your body will say enough is enough I promise you that. And more times than not it will be at the worse time. I say all this to say you have to know when enough is enough. You can harm yourself and your body by not sleeping enough and over studying. Years later I read a studying that showed how much your brain is retaining when you take extended periods of time studying.

First, make sure college is something you honestly want to pursue. I know that should be first, but it is not. There are so many honorable things that can make you just as if not more successful. Military and trade school or primary ones that come to mind.Don't choose a major just to chose one. Chose a major for you and major in something you love and not something you think will make you, "all the monies." Unless you want to be a doctor or the like, then ignore me like a bad glass of unsweet tea. And don't be afraid to change that sucker. You just must be smart about it. It's ok not you have your whole life planned out at 18 or heck even 21. As someone who chose what they love I can shout it to the rooftops. But explore yourself and what it is you want out of life. Take a dumb class or two. Lord knows I took enough of them. You may just discover your next passion. Or the class may have a bigger impact on you than you'll ever realize.

Sherry, says I have to add for you to study abroad. Her words, "It's life changing and this from a Christian kid." I'll put it like this: take advantage of every opportunity whether it is abroad or not. "Just take it all in, seize the chance to be free before you're an adult."
My final piece of advice would be to find a healthy balance. While it's great to have a schedule where a class isn't until noon or only M-W-F, all schedules I've had, by the way, it means nothing if you don't take advantage of the said schedule. You're in college now, and there's no one to plan your lunch time/ free time or even tell you to go to class and make your bed. All things I urge. Find a schedule that works best for you and WERK it. Side note: If you go to a larger school make sure to plan your classes accordingly. You are not going to walk across campus that quick.
"In the end don't sweat the small stuff "

If you ever have questions related to college/ Financial Aid or housing etc. email/tweet/Fb/gram/stalk away. I can probably help or know someone who has an answer. HA! I've been out of college going on four years, and I still get questions.

Of course I eat meat... I'm from the South

P.F. Chang's: Thanks for bein' my fran and sponsorin' this post. Of course all the grit, sass, and calories consumed and gained are my own. To bad Pf Changs can't take the calories and food baby birthed. But seriously y'all.
So I have this new hasghtag: #Diditfortheblog. I'm sure I'm not the inventor of this hashtag but Imma claim it and pretend that I did. Maybe I should pause and explain. This story has nothin' to do with P.F. Changs but I love stories and it'll help explain. So, y'all all know that I joined the Dallas Junior League with, Ride or Die (Sherry) who's in Germany and I'm all jelly. Well we had retreat two weekends ago. Of course they were all, "y'all gotta make frans" and not once were we able to sit with each other. We didn't even get to eat lunch together. Yes, I know the whole point is to make new fran's and connections. See, I'm not shy and have never met a stranger but you ask me to start talkin' about myself and it's gonna be a big ol' hot mess.

Anyways, I'll get to the point. After we switched tables/partners for the millionth time. Ok, maybe it wasn't that many but it sure felt like it. We had to get to know our partner an introduce them. I kept insistin' I had nothin' interestin'. Finally I admitted I blogged only to have my partner admit that she had seen me on Pinterest. Y'all I'd like to say I handled it well but I didn't and I got all awkward. After she introduced me, "as a successful blogger yada yada", a few other ladies came up to tell me they either read me or follow me on some form of social media. Y'all I about lost it and wanted to hide and cry the rest of the day. The flowin' tears emoji was me. It's one thing to put your life all over the internet. It's another to stop and think about the people behind the computer screens readin' or actually meet them. Sherry then proceeded to put all over social media that she was the Gale to my Oprah. SMH

Holy not gettin' to the point. Well, when some of the girls kept askin' about the blog or things I've done I kept sayin' #Diditforttheblog. I was tellin' them how at first my frans/family were weirded out but now that the opportunities and trips are rollin' in they jumped on the train' and ain't gettin' off anytime soon. No seriously we were at dinner in Mississippi and my Momma stopped the whole table from touchin' the catfish until I got the photo I needed. See, she #Diditfortheblog. My newest obession is sayin' this and I know my frans are gonna get tired of me sayin' it and hashtaggin' it. Oh well, cause I did it for the blog and they just gonna have to deal.

Fast forward to P.F. Changs. I was offered the chance to team up with them and help promote/review a new section of their menu. P.F. Chang's small plates  is somethin' new they are tryin' out. Along with erasin' their seasonal menu items they added a happy hour. Many of the small plate items as well as Sushi and certain drinks are at a discounted price. Monday-Friday 3pm to 7pm between $3 to $7 dollars... Is that not a smart way to market somethin'?!?! I was all excited to eat all of the food when at the last minute I had no one to go with. Sherry kept suggestin' I ask one of my new Junior League fran's but I was all shy and was worried they wouldn't want to or be able to for that matter. Thank goodness Bestfran Numero Duo happened to be free. I called her and she was all, "I had a late lunch with the parents. I'm washin' laundry." I was all, " #Diditfortheblog, they want us to come eat the food." Thanks goodness she agreed.

I met up with Bestfran Numero Duo at the P.F. Chang's in Dallas. I had never been and about got lost navigatin' North Park to find it. All my Dallas lovers understand. That mall is not just swanky but huge. I finally meet up with Bestfran and we caught up while we waited to be seated. Yes, we had a slight wait but who cares. We #Diditfortheblog. Plus, can you really complain when you aint' payin'? I know I sure can't.

The first thing our waiter did was tell us all about the new menu and how things had changed. I laughed and wen't, "We sure do know." We couldn't decided what we wanted so Casey was all I can drink. We went through the new small plates menu and I knew immediately I wanted to try the Jimaca Pork Tacos. Casey turned her nose up at the pork reference only for me to say, "What now you don't eat pork?" Her response was priceless: "Of course I eat meat. I'm from the South!" We laughed and then I picked out the Asian Carnitas Bao to try. Y'all and try we did. Casey put up with me snappin' all the pics and yammerin' on and on. When they waiter came back over he realized I was bloggin'. He told me he should have guessed cause of all the photos I was takin'. He said I was the second person he had seen that week. We even started jokin' around cause I didn't tell him the Mangos were out to get me. He was fussin' at me for not tellin' him and that he could have input the items we were orderin' in the system and they will break it down by allergies. Apparently they are one of the only restaurants that do that and I told him I would mention it. Y'all this waiter was the loveliest. Especially to put up with us.

We were strugllin' to eat all the food but we kept orderin'. Casey was tooo cute. I forget that I hadn't seen her in forever and never really hung out with her when I was #Diditfortheblog. I kept havin' to tell her, "no it's ok. They want us to eat the food. They give me money to eat all the food." We called the waiter back over only for him to tell us the items we wanted had already been ordered on the house. He said he had read our mind. He felt bad cause the next round took forever to come out. When the Edamame Hummus and Ahi Tartare with Avocado finally came out, the manger brought them. I wish I could tell you that I was payin' attention to the manager and all the things he had to say about the new dishes but I wasn't. I was to focused on how are waiter had the best smile and was super friendly.

The waiter kept makin' jokes with us and made sure we loved everythin'. We finished the night with dessert cause why not... No, no plate went unturned. I'd like to say that we are foodies that enjoy a good Asian Cuisine but really we are Texas fatty's that love love love to eat. No, we really do. I'll just calk it up to bein' Southern.

I'll deff have to come back in visit. So, P.F. Changs, thanks for the "girls night out" we sure had fun.

See, I had a point with the #Diditfortheblog hashtag. It just took me many paragraphs to make it.

How y'all doin'. I hope y'all are gettin' rain too. It's stormin' like crazy here but it's all good cause I'm off. I'm headed to Jackson Mississippi for the next few days for a family reunion. If you wanna follow my adventures, I'll be usin' the hashtag #HeyJackson on social media. My family ain't gonna know what hit 'em. My camera is charged and ready. I even bought a new memory card that hold just around 2,000 pics.

I'm also real excited cause I'm bringin' my #GiveLove #GiveLove letter to Mississippi. The short version: I leave anonymous "love notes" in hopes that it will encourage and bless someone. Y'all can click the links if you want more info or wanna see other letters I've left.

What are y'all's plans for the holiday weekend. Does your family do family reunion as big as mine? What's a must for you when vacationin'. I hope y'all have a great weekend and I'll see y'all Monday.
