This time #GiveLove started with Hello

Lindt HELLO, loves me enough to give me all the chocolate. I have good enough sense to share and not eat it all. They must know it's my birfday and therefore wanted to share all the affiliate links with me.

I sat in  my ford, ready to pee my pants and about to have a meltdown. Headed to Galveston for the weekend, a blog conference was in my future. Stalled on 45, I didn't know why. I only knew I'd been sittin' for over and hour. Much sweet tea later had led me to that moment. The traffic eventually dispersed and I drove. Its as if I'd drove for hours. I whiped into a prakin' lot only to run out the car into the store. I almost knock an elderly lady tryin' to find the restroom. I mutter my apologies. Bathroom used, I wonder around the store lookin' for chocolate. I know I'm runnin' late and must hurry. It's a good thing I've had this chocolate and know what it looks like I told myself.

I purchased my Lindt HELLO chocolate and then I'm was on my way. Back to my car I rushed. To continue the hours drive left to Galveston. I sat through the openin' speech, all the while wonderin' what I would do with my new chocolate.

Hours later I sat in a hotel room catchin' up with Kay. She was to be my roomate for the conference. I'd met her a year prior at the same conference. We chatted, we generally caught up. The conference came and went and I was left to myself in Galveston. That's when the idea hit me. It'd been a while since I had done my GiveLove campaign. I'd been itchin' to bring it back. Hmm, this would be the prefect time I thought. It was settled.

I awoke early Sunday Mornin'. Pause, I overslept. I wrote out my letters as I would any other time. Only this time I had a little treat to add to each letter. I was beyond excited. I met up with another fellow blogger and fran; Addie. We walked, we chatted, we ate and we sight saw Galveston. We both had decided to stay and extra night since neither had been to that part of the Texas Gulf. I informed her of my GiveLove challenge. She was intrigued. So we roamed from the Seawall to Broadway and everywhere we stepped we hid letters. Anonymous love letters that we hoped someone would find when they are feelin' down and it would brighten the day they were havin'. That they would open the Lindt HELLO chocolate and the cuteness of it all would bring a smile to the faces of all.

Scenes from the Weekend

SHARE THIS | PIN-IT TWEET IT

If your weekend could be summed up in three words what three words would they be?
Mine: Concerts ( Alex & Sierra; Dustin Lynch) -Jesus- Southern Nights-Frans?
Whoops, that's five words.

And why is is that I always meet the ratchet people? I've been told I've never met a stranger and can make a fran anywhere. Every now and then this is a problem. Like Thursday night after the Alex & Sierra concert. I rode the train into downtown Dallas. No way I was gonna fight the traffic or parkin'.This was all fine till it was time to come home. They really should rename The West End station ratchet station. I sat next to a couple of interesting people. I got an earful on all the inappropriate things they have done on not only the train but at night on the train tracks. One of the guys kept tryin' to get me into the conversation until I told him the conversation was to ratchet for me and I wasn't payin' attention. Bwahaha. But, Alex & Sierra were not ratchet and I appreciate those harmonies so it's all good.

What is your favorite song currently?
Mine- American Prayer by Dustin Lynch

Y'all already know how I feel about Country Music. It'll always be my first love. Those Summers spent in Southern Louisiana & Northern Mississippi with my Paw Paw as he sang all the good ol' boys. I find it funny cause I called him the other day and he didn't know who Blake Shelton was. You know the song by Alabama that says, "If you're gonna play in Texas (you gotta have a fiddle in the band)"? Well, that's my Paw Paw about all music. So for him puttin' it nicely: Folks in the vein of Blake Shelton don't have enough fiddle in the band. It makes for easy holiday and birthday presents. It was always somethin' Dallas Cowboys related or Country Music. But, remember this is the same man that thought he was in the internet and just learned what email was but doesn't have a com-pew-ter. Somehow I think he would have appreciated Dustin Lynch cause he sang covers of all the good ol' boys.

#givethanksgiveback

I've been dreaming big lately- about how nice it would be to see the blogging community in the community. So, I'm thrilled to present this nationwide blog meet up with a purpose: #givethanksgiveback. Here’s how it works:

I’m looking for (at least) one blogger per state to step up as a leader – your job will be to plan a charitable blog meet up for the month of November – run a canned food drive, serve lunch at a soup kitchen, serve others wherever you feel passionate about giving back! Each leader will display a master post in October linking to each state’s event info. All throughout the month, bloggers can access the information and sign up for November’s event. All are welcome to link up about their experiences after their event.

<div class="Re•solve Thanks" style="width: 350px; margin: 0 auto;"> <a href="http://bekahsresolve.blogspot.com" rel="nofollow"> <img src="http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b630/bekahchica/blog%20buttons/givethanksgiveback_zps22821c94.jpg" alt="Re" width="150" height="150" /> </a> </div>

Here is the timeline:

Sept 8-13 – Sign ups for state leaders.
Oct 3 – Leaders must have November event scheduled and turned in for the master listing.
Oct 6 – All leaders post master listing to their blogs and post about their specific event between now and 10/10.
November – Meet up and give back by Thanksgiving! Blog about it and link up. Link up will be live 11/1-12/7.

I hope you're as excited as I am! Come back Monday if you're ready to take charge. Or, come back on 10/6 to find an event near you so you can also #givethanksgiveback!

SIDENOTE: I am the leader for Texas but we could deff have more givebacks in other parts of the state since I am in the Dallas area. Drop me a line if you are interested and helpin' out. We already have a few people on the list for Dallas and I'd love for y'all to join us.

Mississippi, my ode to thee...

Photos by my cousin Kevin Waller Sr.

I sat at a park in Jackson. I'm told the name was 100 Black Men. How fittin' I think. I wanna taste, see, smell and experience it all. Notebook in hand, my Paw Paw is next to me unamused. All he really wants is shade and BBQ. Bein' the eldest in attendance it's as if i'm in front of royalty. Known' I may never get the chance I begin. I ask of his 80+ years on earth. He stays quiet. A man of few words, I've never known my Paw Paw to say much. I  guess it's the quiet Southern spirit in him. I pause then know where to go. Mississippi I think. "Paw Paw, I say. He's exasperated but indulges. "I wanna know more about your younger years. Were you born in Greenville?" It's as if a light clicks. Success I whisper to myself. And the conversation flows. For someone who speaks low and slow I struggle to keep up. There's a ,"born of a midwife, sold ice in rural northern Mississippi here, plowed a mule and tractor at 9 there. 18 drove tractors for Daddy here, finished 12th grade then went to work in jewelry there. Farmin', yes farmin' was in our blood. But I knew this. I needed more. Siblings are mentioned. So many are mentioned I loose count around ten. How did I not know this? Wait, I did but never cared. I mentally slap myself and struggle to refocus while he rambles on about a 64 Chevy he built. Now I really don't care but pretend I do.  Army... Now we're gettin' to the good stuff I think. Aww, Basic Training was in Arkansas. Well, that's no fun. I knew we had Miilitary background. I paid attention to that long slide show of the family history night one while the sister cracked jokes.  I want more my mind screams. I want the information he's never spoke of. Just sit patient I tell myself. I can't. I interrupt and ask about Greenville. I'd heard stories of how my Momma and her sisters were the first to integrate the elementary school in Greenville. I must know more. How does this even come about in the mid 60's? Paw Paw pauses for a good moment. He starts ramblin' on about the men who attacked him one day after work and how nothin' was done to them cause he was black. Ohh, this I knew. And then he veers. He tells of marchin' in the Mississippi Civil Rights. The things he saw. The love/hate he felt. Walkin' Washington Avenue with a white professor from Tugaloo College and the hate that brave man got. The attack and how he never saw that man again. He talks of planin' to walk into the courthouse protection in hand. He never makes it. He has good enough sense to go home. The next day a younger white gentleman named Kerry Stern walks on his yard as he mows the lawn. His wife in the Kitchen, his kids in the house. "We have a brief- yes sir, no sir chat", he finishes. Then the guy says he knows my reputation around town. He knows I'll fight for my kids. He has a proposition. He wants my kids to go to school.. before he can finish My Uncle Robert is brother becomes intrigued and looks over. "Got 'em", I tell myself . I guess he's never heard this part of the story. By now the spades games has stopped. The little rugrats rollin' on the floor about to catch a whoopin' have ceased and all eyes are on my Paw Paw. Those not listenin' are either playin' basketball, swimmin' or settin' up lunch. He continues...  of how a simple conversation lead to a monumental moment in Mississippi history. I'm silent. All my life I'd imagine some grand elaborate moment, some monumental happenstance. When really it was two men forgin' a friendship over their love of tractors. I can't help but smile at the man I call my favorite person. My Paw Paw. And it it's then I realize why he's lived in the same two bedroom house 40+ years. Why he's never left. Why he loves Mississipi so much.

So, Mississippi, I marvel at your beauty, your gracious bounty.Your summer heat and gentle wind. Your kind spirit and Southern ways.

Mississippi, here's to you.  54 years ago you gave to thee.

Happay Birfday, Momma.

#HeyJackson: Cock of the Walk

I sat at breakfast in a hotel lobby in Jackson, Mississippi. My Momma to my right. My newly minted cousin to my left. Well, you could say he's been my cousin all my life but this was our first encounter, so new he was to me. He began goin' on and on of how he wanted some good catfish. I looked at him and went, "what do they not have catfish in Georgia?" He looked at me dumbfounded and without missin' a beat replied, "you do know Mississippi is known for it's catfish?" I felt stupid as a light went off in my head. So that's why we always ate catfish when we visited Paw Paw on those extended weekends in Greenville. But that doesn't explain why my parents were obsessed with the tamale stand near his house. We have that in Texas and it's much better. I looked at him skeptical. After-all how could I trust someone who thought the queso served the night before at dinner was amazin'? It was decided we must have catfish. My sister ran to the lady at the check-in counter to ask. I followed tweetin' Visitms for suggestions. My sister informed the lady behind the counter it had to be a hole in the wall and greasy. Preferably by black people. I tried not to laugh out loud. At the same time quite a few hits came to me via Twitter. All were suggestin' the same places. My cousin wasn't impressed. For a young engineer he never seemed impressed. Done deal. We would get catfish before the long weekend was done.

We put the catfish in the back of our minds and prepared to put on a smile and suffer through this family picnic, in the Mississippi heat, that only the elders like my Great Aunt KB (his grandma)  and my Paw Paw were excited about. Halfway through the picnic I see my cousin Justin is gone. Later that night he tells me Aunt KB took him for catfish since he doesn't eat pork and it was a hole in the wall disgrace. I laughed and claimed that's what he got for goin' without me. That Saturday we awoke to a free day. Pool  loughin' and the Reservoir was in our future. Halfway through we became famished. Wait, do people still say famished? Well we were. Finally catfish was in our future. I checked my phone and saw that we were within a few minutes of one of the restaurants Visitms recommended. Justin started yammerin' on that this better be worth it. His eyes light up when we pulled in the parkin' lot and he saw a black man approach. I laughed so hard. That boy needs to get outta Alabama/Georgia more often and come to Texas.

We approached the man and he assured us this was some of the best catfish this side of the Mississippi River. I was pleased but Justin was still hesitant. An older gentleman greeted us and asked if we'd ever dined with them before. We explain that we ain't from around here and he smiled. He welcomed us and then asked where we're visitin' from." Texas, Georgia/Alabama, and Wisconsin," I said. He smiled and brought us to our seat. He then told us to enjoy our stay. Justin gave the menu a once over and smiled when he realized they didn't have much diversity on the menu. "They stick to what they know", he goes. The young waiter approaches and bragged on the establishment. He went on about how he was just in Biloxi and you'd think bein' on the Gulf they'd have the best fish but they didn't. The best fish he'd ever had was in the Capital/River area. I smiled and thank him. We decided to order the big meal. I was a little dismayed as I tried to take photo after photo only to fail cause the lightin' was so poor. At least we have a beautiful view of the river. I am beyond ecstatic when my sweet tea comes in a funky glass. Mmm, sweet tea just the way I liked it. The excitement continued to build.

The young waiter returned and put on a show as he delivered our hot water cornbread and coleslaw. I smiled entertained. Moments later out catfish arrived. We bowed our heads in prayer before I assaulted the table in pictures. Justin looked on unamused. It was then I am reminded we only just met and he's never been out to eat with me. He gives me a look of warnin' but obliged. I finished and then look over. This was the moment of truth. He took a bite. He took another. He smiled. He grabed the hot sauce. He smiled more. He glanced at his ungreasy hand. He chuckled and goes, "This fish is sooo fresh. Just look at it. Yesterday he was swimmin' and today he's on my plate. Now this is some catfish. MMM, now this is a ten!"

I chuckle. I make a mental note so months later when I remember to type this down... his words are written precise.

If you ever happen to be in the beautiful Jackson, Mississippi area make sure to stop by Cock of the Walk and get ya some.

Eshakti

Big thanks to Eshakti for bein' my fran today and makin' me look so "Dallas"

I reach to insert my SD card in the computer. My heart sinks as I realize all the fabulous photos Sherry took of me at the Junior League Small Group meetin' have somehow been erased. My mind scrambles. When will I have free time to take more photos? My composer is somewhat kept when I realize this will  give me another excuse to wear such a fabulous dress. I chuckle to myself think' back to that Small Group Meetin'. All the wonderful compliments on my outfit. All the jealousy and aww when I admitted the dress was given to me by the online boutique Eshakti. The older lady walkin' to the bathroom was dumbfounded. She stopped and asked if Sherry wanted to be in the picture. When we explained I was a blogger and how it all worked she was beside herself. "Soo, they just give you the dress and all you have to do is write about it on your blog thing", she asked. "Yes", I replied. "Well, it really is a gorgeous dress and you look great in it", she replied with a smile before goin' back to her table.

My mind comes to. Focus, 'Leshea, I tell myself. You have a review due and photos needed. Oh I know, you took some photos at the Nodding Donkey for the Truck Rally kick-off in the dress. I scramble through all the folders. Those pictures are gone, too. I sigh under my breath. I really should learn my camera better and save pics right away. Hmm, and then it occurs to me.

You never need an excuse to wear a pretty dress. Especially here in The South. I back away from the computer, slip on the dress and rush out the door. I drive until I can't drive anymore. It really isn't much when your town is only 25 square miles. They say that equates to five miles wide and five miles long. Hmm, growin' up it never seemed that big. Again I refocus myself. I find myself at the glorious prayer chapel in town. Yes, I tell myself. This represent me well. I struggle to pose. Do I show off the lovely pockets, the knee length? Do I give a twirl? Or maybe I just pose. Yes, that's what I do. I pose and show the modesty yet beauty in the dress.

I make a mental note to tag Eshakti in my review. To brag about how easy and convenient the website is. How reasonably priced the garments are. How custom fitted every piece is to your body type. Yes, that is what I make a note to remember most. How as a person of crazy little and petite stature even I found sizes to match.

And then I finish with a here's to you Bekah. Now you see the dress in all it's glory. Eshakti go get ya some of her.
