Consider this the fifth installment of I am the South and the South is me: Southern Portraits. The girl with the same initials as me.
"My mind drifts... "...Momma, I wanna go visit my white Grandma." I chuckle, thikin' back to our childhood and the conversation with Momma. Not understandin' that Grandma was half Native American; the sister would call her white. The same Grandma that got away with drinkin' from the White water fountain, in the Jim Crow South. The Grandma she's headed to stay with for a few weeks. For someone who's only been to four states excludin' Texas, three of them in the South, her trip to Wisconsin, amuses me much. The sound of her voice pulls me back in. Her words, "...'LESHEA, don't laugh at me. I'm just askin' cause I've never been on a plane. It's become standard practice for us. She talks. I drive. She ask my opinion. I give it. I ask her to do my hair. She refuses. I rag on her Instagram selfies. She rags on my need to document everything. She continues with her questions at rapid fire- "I hope I get to practice usin' a razor so I can do more men's cuts. I bet they have different hair cuts up their? ...'LESHEA, what if their public transportation isn't like ours? They live faster lives up North... I think I'll just tell people I'm from Dallas and not say Texas. That way they won't ask lots of questions or try and get over on me..." I quickly glance over, as we drive down a backroad jammin' to an old country song- she'd tell you that I was jammin', while her mind was elsewhere. I want to laugh and tell her that If she can make it in Texas wearin' 3D glasses with the lenses cut out and bandanas on her head like the cast of Duck Dynasty then I think she'll be just fine their. They might even love her at the salon she's doin' an apprenticeship at. Instead I reply, "You'll probably have an accent to some. They might even ask you stupid questions. But you don't have an accent to me. You sound like an American." I try not to laugh as the girl with the same initials as me replies, "what does a Texan sound like anyway?""

I am Alyssa Diamond
Why does my brain read this in a southern accent!? Like stronger than the one I have now.
ReplyDeleteHAHA! YES! Prefect even though she really doesn't have one. My dad died when she was much younger and by the time she got talkin' age our parents had really lost much of theirs. Especially my Dad.
DeleteAwww! Is she there now? Good luck to her!
ReplyDeleteHaha I read this in a southern accent too! Are you from Rockwall? I'm from Greenville! It's nice to see a fellow blogger relatively close to me!
ReplyDeleteYay, your not to far from me. Your in Yesterfoods neck of the woods. I love her blog, btw. I live just on the other side of Rockwall headed towards Dallas.
DeleteStill enjoying this series, look forward to new ones - especially your amazing photographs.
ReplyDeleteThank you Skye. I'm having fun with it. Especially this one since it was a random question I had with her on a normal occasion
DeleteHa ha! I read this with a huge southern accent too! What does a Texan sound like…. I have family for all over Texas and they all sound different to me :)

Lovin this series! Best of luck to her!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, what does a Texan sound like, anyway?! I've been here for 10 years and so far, I've found it depends on *what part* of Texas you are in! Love this, love your photos, and we are neighbors...I'm in Wylie!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up at Wordy Wednesday...I hope to read more from you! :)
